The Ghana National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons has issued a stern advisory against the display and misuse of firearms during the upcoming Homowo festival. The commission has urged celebrants to prioritize safety and legality, emphasizing that the use of firearms poses grave risks to human life.


Safety Concerns :

The commission's advisory highlights the dangers of firearm misuse during cultural events, including accidental shootings, injuries, and fatalities. Ghana has seen a significant increase in gun violence, with a 253% rise in gun-related incidents in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.


Community Involvement :

The commission has urged community leaders, traditional authorities, and youth groups to support the campaign for a peaceful and secure festival. The Accra Regional Police Command has also issued a firm warning against the use of live ammunition at the Homowo festival celebration, emphasizing that any individual found engaging in such acts will be arrested and prosecuted.
